Cedar City sits at altitude, and any long move from here climbs before it descends. The corridor north crosses higher ground, and routes east and west more so.

Between roughly November and March that is a genuine planning factor rather than a footnote, and it catches out people who judge conditions by looking out of their own window.

Local conditions are not route conditions

The most useful thing on this page. A clear morning here says very little about the higher sections of the route, and a storm can close or restrict a road while the town itself is fine.

Check the state's road conditions service for the whole route rather than the forecast for your address, and check it the evening before as well as the morning.

What actually happens

Roads get restrictions rather than simply closing. Chain or traction requirements can apply to commercial vehicles when they do not apply to cars, which means a loaded truck may be unable to travel a route you could drive yourself.

Closures do happen, and they are not usually long, but they can turn a same-day delivery into an overnight one.

A loaded truck also handles differently. Weight helps traction and hurts stopping, and a professional driver taking it slowly is doing the right thing even when it costs hours.

How to plan around it

Build slack. Do not schedule a winter long move for the last possible day before a closing or a lease end. A day or two of margin is what turns a delay into an inconvenience.

Ask what happens if the route is closed. Who decides, what the delay costs, and whether goods would be held overnight in the truck or elsewhere.

Assume the later end of any delivery window. Pack a two-week box accordingly, with bedding, a basic kitchen, medication, documents and clothing travelling with you.

Keep cold-sensitive items out of the truck. Over a single afternoon it rarely matters; over a night parked at altitude it does. Liquids, electronics, batteries, instruments and plants go in your heated vehicle.

Consider the season deliberately

Winter is cheaper here for good reasons and this is one of the trade-offs. For a local move it is a small factor. For a long haul out of the region it is a real one, and if your dates are flexible, spring is easier.
