Count before you move, not after

The single most useful decision. A move is the natural moment for a full inventory count, and doing it beforehand gives you three things: an accurate record to reconcile against, a chance to identify obsolete stock before paying to transport it, and a clean starting position at the new site.

Reconcile again after. A discrepancy found the week of the move is traceable; the same discrepancy found in three months is not.

Deal with dead stock first

Every warehouse holds inventory that will not sell. Moving it costs space on the truck and then costs space you are renting.

Sell it down, return what can be returned, write off and dispose of the rest before the move rather than after. This is usually the largest single saving available.

Racking is its own project

Not furniture. Pallet racking is a structural system, and how it is dismantled and reinstalled matters.

Beams and uprights should be labelled by bay as they come down, and damaged components should be identified rather than reinstalled. Racking is designed to a load configuration, and reassembling it differently changes what it can safely hold.

Reinstallation may need anchoring to the new floor, and depending on height and configuration may require an engineer's involvement or an inspection. Establish that before the move rather than after it is standing.

Confirm the new building's floor and ceiling height early, since racking that does not fit is an expensive discovery.

Sequence for operation

Racking goes in first, then inventory, and inventory goes in by location rather than by whatever comes off the truck next.

Map the new layout before the move and label both the racking and the pallets to match. A crew can then place stock correctly without asking, which is most of the time saving on a job like this.

Put fast-moving lines nearest the pick face and the dispatch door.

Equipment and the practical points

Forklifts and powered equipment need their own arrangements; batteries, charging and fuel all have handling requirements. Confirm power for charging at the new site.
