Businesses with heavy equipment frequently ask a moving company to handle all of it, reasonably enough, since it all needs moving. There is a genuine line here, and it is about capability and cover rather than willingness.

What a moving crew is equipped for

Furniture, shelving, benches, cabinets, tooling, stock, appliances, and portable or wheeled equipment within the range dollies, straps and a liftgate can handle safely.

That covers most of what is in most premises, including a good deal that is heavy.

What is rigging

Machinery that is anchored to the floor or requires levelling and alignment on installation. Anything needing machine skates, a gantry, a forklift or engineered lifting. Loads heavy enough that the lifting arrangement itself has to be calculated. Equipment where the manufacturer specifies particular handling.

Riggers have the equipment, the training and, importantly, insurance written for that work.

Why the insurance difference matters to you

This is the practical point rather than a technicality.

A general liability policy for a moving company is written for moving work. If a crew attempts a lift outside that scope and something is damaged, the position on cover can be considerably less clear than anybody expected.

The exposure is not only the machine. It is the floor, the building, and the people around it. A machine that shifts during an improvised lift is a serious incident.

So when a moving company declines a piece of equipment, that is the system working rather than an inconvenience.

How to arrange a mixed job

Common and straightforward once planned.

Get the machinery list assessed by a rigger first, since their availability and method usually set the schedule. Have them do the machines, and a moving crew do everything else, ideally on different days so neither is working around the other.

Sequence it so the machines are placed before the rest of the fit-out goes in, because a machine cannot be manoeuvred through a furnished workshop.

What to have ready

Manufacturer documentation with weights and lifting points, which is what a rigger needs to quote. Floor loading information for the new premises. Confirmation of power supply and any three-phase requirement.
