Why people make the Salt Lake City to St. George move
This is the most travelled long move in the state, and it is overwhelmingly one-directional. People retire down to Washington County, buy a second home there, transfer for work, or simply decide that twenty more winters of shovelling a Salt Lake driveway is not the plan.
What makes it awkward is that it is too far to be a local move and too short to feel like a proper interstate one. It falls into a gap: most Salt Lake movers treat it as an out-of-area job and hand it off, while national van lines price it like a cross-country move and give you a delivery window measured in days.
It is neither. It is a full day's work down one motorway, and it is entirely possible to do it with one truck and one crew — provided the company has people at both ends. We do, because we started in St. George in 2012 and came north afterwards.
The difference that matters
Most long moves change hands. This one does not.
Most movers at either end of this route are not set up to run the whole distance, so the shipment goes to a line-haul carrier partway. Here is what that changes.

Loading in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake proper brings the access problems the suburbs do not. Downtown and Sugar House apartments mean lift bookings, loading-dock windows and a certificate of insurance for building management — all arranged before the day rather than negotiated at the door. Older homes in the Avenues and around Liberty Park bring narrow stairwells and street parking that has to be planned for.
Unloading in St. George
St. George is mostly the opposite problem: wide driveways, single-storey homes and easy truck access, but heat that decides the working hours. Summer unloads start early for good reason. Many arrivals are moving into a newly built home or a community with gate access, both of which want confirming in advance.
Worth knowing
Planning this run
- It is a full day of driving with a loaded truck. That means the load has to be packed for hours of vibration and a lot of elevation change, not for a four-mile hop across the valley.
- Closing dates rarely line up. Selling in Salt Lake County and buying in Washington County almost never produces two dates that meet neatly. Storage in transit is the normal answer and is worth pricing before you commit to either date.
- Seasonal direction. Demand runs heavily southbound in autumn and spring. If your date is flexible by a fortnight, say so — it can matter.
- Winter at the north end, not the south. The complication on a winter run is loading day in Salt Lake, not the arrival. Ice on a driveway, salt on the floors and an early sunset all apply at the top of the route and none of them apply at the bottom.
- Take less than you think. Snow gear, heavy outdoor furniture and anything built for a cold climate is often not worth paying to move three hundred miles. Deciding before you pack is cheaper than deciding after you unpack.
