Long-Distance Movers

Delivery day is the point where a long-distance move is either closed out properly or left in a state that becomes difficult weeks later. Most of that turns on twenty minutes of attention at exactly the moment you have the least energy for it.

Just-In-Time Moving handles long-distance moves from West Valley City and Salt Lake County.

Before you sign anything

Have the inventory in your hand. Not in a box, not on a phone that has died. Tick items off as they come in rather than watching. Twenty tedious minutes, and it is the only thing that converts a suspicion into a specific claim.

Look at things as they are unloaded, not later. Furniture particularly, as it comes off, before it is placed and surrounded.

Do not sign a clean receipt if it is not clean. If something is damaged or missing, note it on the paperwork before signing rather than agreeing to sort it out afterwards. A signature saying everything arrived in good order is exactly what will be pointed at later.

Nobody will object to you writing an exception on it. If somebody does, that itself is informative.

What to note, and how

Be specific. Which item, what is wrong, where. Photograph it at the same time, with the crew present.

If something has not arrived, note that too, along with its inventory number.

Keep your copy of everything.

Practical setup for the day

Be there yourself, or somebody who can make decisions and inspect. This is not a day to delegate to a neighbour.

Have utilities on, and put a sheet of paper with the room name on each door so placement does not require forty conversations while you are trying to check things.

Know where the truck can sit. Large interstate vehicles do not always fit residential streets, and the answer is sometimes a smaller truck shuttling.

Afterwards

Raise anything in writing promptly rather than waiting until you have finished unpacking. Ask for the claims process and what they need.

One thing worth knowing about boxes specifically: you are checking that they arrived, not what is inside them. Nobody expects you to open a hundred cartons on a driveway, and you should not try. What matters at delivery is that the count matches the inventory and that any box which is visibly crushed, wet or damaged is noted as such before you sign. Contents are a separate conversation, and having noted the condition of the outside is what makes that conversation possible later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I sign the delivery paperwork straight away?

Not if anything is damaged or missing. Note the exception on the document before signing rather than agreeing to sort it out afterwards, because a signature saying everything arrived in good order is what gets pointed at later.

How do I check a delivery properly?

Have the inventory in your hand and tick items off as they come in rather than watching, and look at furniture as it is unloaded rather than after it has been placed and surrounded by boxes.

What if something is missing?

Note it on the paperwork with its inventory number, photograph what did arrive, keep your copy, and raise it in writing promptly rather than waiting until you have finished unpacking weeks later.
