Plenty of people move on their own. New to the area, working odd hours, or simply without anybody available on the day. The advice written for households assumes a second pair of hands throughout, and it does not transfer well.

What genuinely cannot be done alone

Worth being honest about, because this is where people get hurt.

Anything requiring two hands and balance at the same time. A mattress on stairs. A sofa through a turn. A refrigerator, ever. A desk or table that has to be tilted through a doorway.

The failure mode is not dropping something. It is being stuck halfway, holding weight, with nowhere to set it down and nobody to help, and that is how backs and fingers get injured.

The arrangement that works

Do everything you can alone over time, and hire a crew for a short window for the things you cannot.

Boxes by car across the preceding week or two. Then a crew for an hour or two for the bed, the sofa, the appliances and anything else on the list above.

That is usually a small fraction of the cost of a full move and it removes all of the risk.

Practical things that help when alone

Smaller boxes than you think. Everything has to be liftable by one person, so the usual rule matters double.

A hand truck, borrowed or rented. It converts several trips into one and takes weight off your back on the flat.

Prop doors and clear routes first, before carrying anything. With nobody to open doors, this matters more.

Tell somebody your plan. If you are moving alone, particularly with stairs, let a friend know when you start and finish.

Do not do the heavy things last. People leave the hardest items until the end, when they are tired, which is the worst possible order. Do them first.
