Interstate Moving Scams and How They Work

Long-distance moving has a specific failure mode that local moving largely does not, and it follows a consistent shape. Recognising the shape is most of the protection.

The pattern

It generally runs like this. A quote arrives that is noticeably lower than the others, given quickly and without anybody looking at what you own. A deposit is requested up front. The paperwork is thin or arrives late.

On loading day the estimate is revised upward, sometimes considerably, and the reasons are hard to check. By then your possessions are on a truck.

Then delivery becomes vague. Dates slip without explanation, the people you speak to are not the people who loaded, and payment is demanded before anything comes off.

The leverage is the whole mechanism, and it is created at the point where an unverified company takes custody of everything you own.

The specific warnings

A quote without a survey. On an interstate move, a figure produced without somebody seeing your belongings, in person or on video, is not an estimate.

A large deposit. The clearest single signal.

No written estimate, or one lacking detail about what it covers.

Vagueness about who transports and who delivers. Ask directly whether the company carries the load itself or arranges for somebody else to.

A company that will not be pinned down on a delivery window. A window is honest. Refusing to discuss it is not.

No verifiable business identity, or details that differ between a website, a listing and the paperwork.

What good looks like

A survey before a number. A written estimate stating what it assumes. A clear answer about who carries the load. An inventory, with a copy for you. A realistic delivery window and an explanation of what would change it. Licensing and insurance shown on request.

If you are already in the middle of one of these and something feels wrong, the practical advice is to slow down rather than sign. Do not pay a revised amount in cash on the spot, ask for the change in writing with a reason, and photograph the load and the paperwork. The pressure in these situations is deliberate and it works because people feel they have no choice with a truck in the driveway. Taking twenty minutes to document what is happening costs nothing and changes what you can do afterwards.
