Unloading Help: The Other Half of a DIY Move

Unloading is a service on its own and it is often the better half to hire.

Why the far end is the harder end

You are already exhausted. Loading happens on a rested morning at the start. Unloading happens after packing, loading and driving, which is when people get hurt.

The help does not travel. Friends will give you a Saturday morning locally. They will not follow a truck to another city.

Placement takes longer than carrying. Every item has to go somewhere specific, beds need rebuilding, and there is a new house to learn.

Rental returns have deadlines. An unloading day that overruns costs money directly.

What an unloading crew does

Empties the truck, trailer or container, carries everything to the room it belongs in rather than the nearest floor, reassembles the furniture that was taken apart, and places heavy items where you actually want them.

That last point matters more than people expect. Furniture set down in a hallway gets moved a second time by you, alone, later.

How to make it fast

Number the rooms and put a sign on each door. Then a crew can work without asking, which is most of the time saving.

Decide the big placements before we arrive. Bed here, sofa there. Deciding while somebody holds a wardrobe is slow.

Have the route clear and any protection down.

Tell us if the load is not as described. Trucks are frequently fuller than the person who loaded them remembers.
