Will the Floor Take It? Placing a Heavy Safe

People think about whether a safe will fit through a door and rarely about whether the floor it is going onto should be carrying it. In most cases the answer is fine. In a few it genuinely is not, and it is the kind of question that is easy before and expensive after.

Why a safe is different

A refrigerator weighs perhaps three hundred pounds spread over a reasonable area. A large safe can be twelve hundred or more, standing on a footprint of a few square feet, and often on four small bearing points.

It is the concentration rather than the total that matters. Residential floors are designed for distributed loads, not point loads.

Ground floor over a slab

The straightforward case. A concrete slab will take essentially any residential safe without concern, and it also takes a proper anchor.

If you have the option, this is where a heavy safe belongs.

Over a crawl space or basement

Here the safe sits on a joisted floor. Usually fine for moderate weights, and worth thinking about above them.

Position matters considerably. Against a load-bearing wall, or over a beam or a support post, is far better than in the middle of a span, because that is where a joisted floor deflects most.

Placing it perpendicular across several joists spreads the load better than sitting between two.

Upper floors

The case that warrants actual caution. An upper floor is joisted, spans are longer in newer construction, and engineered joists behave differently from dimensional lumber.

A moderate safe against a load-bearing wall upstairs is typically fine. Something very heavy in the middle of a bedroom floor is a question worth putting to somebody qualified, and it costs a fraction of what a sagging floor costs to correct.

Getting it up there is its own problem, and often the harder one.

Older homes

West Valley City has plenty of housing stock where the original construction assumptions are worth checking rather than assuming. Undersized joists, previous alterations and notched runs for plumbing all reduce capacity in ways that are not visible from above.
