New flooring goes in, and within days the furniture arrives. It is the worst possible sequence and it is the normal one, which is why so many new floors acquire their first damage in the first week.
Just-In-Time Moving works throughout West Valley City and Salt Lake County, and this is what we do about it.
Ask how new the floor actually is
Not a detail. Site-finished hardwood needs time before heavy loads and area rugs go on it, and the finish continues curing after it feels dry. Manufacturers and installers give specific waiting periods and they vary.
If your floor was finished within the last fortnight, ask the installer before anything heavy comes in. It is a short call and it is the difference between a floor that lasts and one that is marked permanently on day one.
Protect the route, not the room
The damage happens along the path from the door, not where furniture ends up. Cover the whole route: entrance, hallway, turns, and the landing area at the top of stairs.
Hard protection rather than a sheet, ideally. Anything a wheel or a dropped foot could press through is not protection.
Doorframes matter as much as floors. The turn from a hallway into a room is where most scraping happens, and it is the least protected surface in a house.
Never drag, and be careful about sliders
Furniture gets lifted and placed, not pushed. A single piece of grit under a leg will score a hardwood or vinyl floor the entire length of the movement, and it cannot be polished out.
Sliders are useful for repositioning on carpet, and less so on hard floors, where they can trap debris and drag it. On a new floor, lift.

Fit pads before the piece is set down
The moment to do this is while the item is being carried, not after it is in place, because putting them on afterwards means lifting everything again.
Felt for wood and vinyl, and replaced periodically, since pads collect grit and become the abrasive they were preventing. Cups for anything very heavy, to spread the load.
Decide placement before it arrives
Every extra repositioning is another chance to mark something. Know where each piece is going, tell the crew as they carry it, and get it right once.
Say if a floor is new when you book and we will bring appropriate protection.
