Children and pets on move day

The honest advice, from having watched a lot of these: if you can arrange for young children and pets to be somewhere else for the day, do it. Not because they are in the way, though a house with an open front door and crews carrying furniture is genuinely not a safe place for a toddler or a dog, but because it lets you concentrate on the hundred small decisions the day produces.

If that is not possible, give them one room that is packed last and unpacked first, and tell the crew it is the last room to be cleared. Having somewhere to retreat to makes an enormous difference, and it is easy to arrange if it is decided in advance rather than improvised at ten in the morning.

Pets specifically: a pet that gets out during a move is one of the more common bad outcomes, and it happens because doors are propped open for hours. A closed room with a sign on it works. So does a friend's house.

The box that matters

Pack a first-night box and keep it with you rather than on the truck. Bedding for every bed, toiletries, medication, chargers, a change of clothes each, whatever the children need to sleep, basic tools, scissors or a knife for opening boxes, and toilet paper.

It sounds obvious and almost nobody does it. The alternative is opening fourteen boxes at eleven at night looking for a toothbrush, on a day when everyone is already worn out.

Make up the beds before you do anything else at the new house. Standard furniture disassembly and reassembly is included, so say that beds come first and they will.

Timing around school

If you have any flexibility, the calendar matters more for families than for anyone else. Summer is the obvious window and it is also the busiest, so book earlier than you think you need to. A midweek date in the middle of a month is a calmer day than the last Saturday of July.
