Why we ask so many questions

An estimate is built from volume and access together, and access is usually the bigger factor of the two.

A three-bedroom house with a driveway and a straight staircase can be a shorter job than a two-bedroom apartment on the third floor with a shared entrance. Less to move, longer day, because every item makes the same slow trip.

So the questions are about stairs at both ends, whether there is an elevator and whether it needs booking, how far the truck can get from the door, and anything unusually heavy or awkward. A safe, a piano, a hot tub, gym equipment or a large aquarium changes the crew and the equipment, not just the time.

Here is the useful signal when you are comparing companies: notice who asked. A quote given without those questions is a guess, and a guess gets corrected on move day. It is never corrected downward.

Not being packed. A crew that arrives to a half-packed house either waits or packs, and both take time that was not in the estimate.

None of those are surprises we want either. Every one of them is prevented by an accurate conversation up front, which is why the questions are worth answering carefully rather than quickly.

What to have ready

Both addresses and the access at each. An honest description of what is coming, including the garage, the shed and anything in storage. Your dates and how firm they are. Anything heavy or unusual.
