Labor-only means you provide the truck, container or storage unit and we provide the crew and its equipment. It suits a lot of moves, and there are a few where it genuinely does not, which is worth being straight about before you book.

When it works well

When you already have the vehicle sorted, or a container is coming anyway. When the move is short and the driving is trivial. When somebody in the household is comfortable driving a rental truck and the route is straightforward.

It also works well as a partial: a crew to load, you drive, and a crew at the far end to unload. Loading is where a crew earns its keep, because a truck packed tight and in tiers does not shift on the road, and gaps are what turn a drive into a repair bill.

When it is the wrong choice

Three situations, honestly.

When nobody actually wants to drive the truck. A rental truck handles nothing like a car, particularly loaded, particularly in wind on the interstate, and even more particularly in winter. If the person nominated to drive is quietly dreading it, the saving is not worth it.

When there are specialty items. A piano, a safe, a hot tub or heavy gym equipment needs particular equipment and crew size. Those can be handled, but they need arranging when you book rather than being added on the day to a crew sized for boxes.

When the timing is tight and depends on you. Labor-only splits responsibility across two parties. If the truck is late, or too small, or the unit is not accessible, the crew is waiting and it is your time being spent. On a move with a hard deadline that risk is worth thinking about.

Helping a family member move

A common version of this: several relatives, a rented truck, and a crew booked for the heavy part. It works well as long as one person is clearly organising it, because a crew taking instructions from four people who disagree is slower than a crew taking them from one.

Decide beforehand what is going and what is not. Put anything not going in a separate room. Have everything boxed, taped and closed before the crew arrives, because the job is billed on their time and a half-packed house is the most expensive thing you can present them with.
