The most expensive way to deal with things you do not want is to move them. You pay to pack it, you pay to transport it, and then you pay again to dispose of it from a house you have only just arrived in. Doing the clear-out first is the single largest saving available on most moves and it is the step that gets skipped.
Just-In-Time Moving hauls junk across West Jordan and Salt Lake County, with the same crews and trucks as the moving work.
Clear out first, and start early
Do it weeks ahead, not the weekend before. Deciding is the slow part, not the carrying, and doing it under deadline is how people end up loading things they meant to deal with.
Start with the places where things accumulate without decisions being made: the garage, the basement, storage closets, the shed, and whatever is behind the shed. Those hold the highest proportion of things nobody actually wants, and they are the areas most often left until there is no time left.
Deciding, when deciding is hard
Three questions get through most of it faster than agonising does.
Would I pay to move this? Not would I keep it if it were free to keep. Would I actively pay for it to be packed and carried to the new house.
Is it easily replaced? If it is common, cheap and you might not even want one in the new place, that is usually the answer.
Does it fit? Measure the new rooms. A sectional that will not go in is not a decision to make later while living around it.
What genuinely helps is having a date booked for the haul-away. An open-ended intention to sort the garage does not produce a sorted garage. A truck coming on Tuesday does.
How it is quoted
By what there is and what is involved in getting it out. Stairs, a long carry from the pile to where a truck can park, and dense material like construction debris affect it more than raw volume does.
Photographs are usually enough for a straightforward load and give a more accurate figure than a description. The estimate comes in writing before anything is loaded.
Some things need a different route. Hazardous material, which covers paint, solvents, chemicals and fuel, is not something we can haul. Ask when you call rather than on the day, so you have time to arrange it instead of being left holding it.
