When a Parent Does Not Want to Move

Families often reach the point where a move looks clearly necessary and the person concerned does not agree. That is a genuinely difficult position and it is worth saying plainly what we can and cannot do about it.

Just-In-Time Moving is locally owned and works throughout Washington and Washington County. This is not advice about family decisions; it is an account of what we have seen work.

Where we stand

The person whose belongings are being moved is our customer, whoever books or pays.

Where they have capacity to make their own decisions, they make them. We will not move somebody who is telling us on the day that they do not want to move, and we will say so plainly rather than proceed on the basis of who is paying.

That is not obstruction. A crew arriving into an active disagreement is bad for everybody, and it is not our role to resolve it.

What tends to help

Time. Decisions made over months land better than decisions announced. The families who manage this well started the conversation long before it was urgent.

Understanding the actual objection. It is rarely the house. More often it is losing independence, being a burden, leaving a spouse's home, or fear of what a move signals. Those are different problems and only one of them is about property.

Giving back control. Somebody who cannot choose whether to move can choose where, when, what comes, and how the new place is arranged. That matters more than it sounds.

Involving somebody outside the family. A physician, a minister or a professional the person trusts can say things a son or daughter cannot.

Smaller steps. A trial stay, a shorter lease, keeping the house for a period. An irreversible move is harder to agree to than a reversible one.

Where capacity is genuinely in question

Different situation entirely, and one for professional advice rather than family consensus.

If somebody may lack capacity to make this decision, that needs assessing properly, and any authority to act on their behalf should be formal. We take instructions from whoever the family identifies, and we do not assess capacity or adjudicate between relatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you move somebody who objects on the day?

No. Where the person has capacity to decide, they decide, and we will say so plainly rather than proceed on the basis of who is paying. A crew arriving into an active disagreement helps nobody and resolving it is not our role.

What tends to help families here?

Time, since decisions made over months land better than announcements; understanding the real objection, which is usually about independence rather than the house; giving back control over where, when and what comes; and involving somebody outside the family.

What if capacity is in question?

That needs assessing properly and any authority to act should be formal, which is a matter for professional advice rather than family consensus. We take instructions from whoever the family identifies and do not assess capacity.
