What You Can Do to Reduce a Piano Move

Piano moving is priced on weight, the route and the crew and equipment a job needs. Those are largely determined by facts you cannot change.

There is a smaller set of things that do make a difference, and they are worth knowing.

Give accurate information

The most valuable thing you can do, and it costs nothing.

Find the make and model, which is usually on the plate inside the lid or on the back. That gives us the actual weight rather than an assumption, and an assumption has to be conservative, which means a larger crew than the job may need.

Photograph the instrument and, more importantly, the route: the doorway, any turn, the stairs from top and bottom, and where a vehicle can park.

An accurately described job is quoted accurately. A vaguely described one is quoted for the worst case.

Clear the route completely beforehand

Not partially. Furniture, rugs, pictures on the wall along the path, anything on the stairs, and the door itself if it can be taken off its hinges easily.

A crew spending twenty minutes clearing a hallway is twenty minutes you are paying for, and it is work you could have done at your own pace.

Do the same at the destination, and decide exactly where the piano is going before we arrive. A piano set down in the wrong place is not something you shift later.

Combine it if you can

tf you are moving house anyway, ask whether the piano can be included rather than booked as a separate visit. Where the household move already needs a crew of that size and the route is straightforward, it frequently can be, and that saves a whole trip.

Where the piano needs stairs and the house does not, separating it is sometimes cheaper. Ask for both.

Timing

Early in the day, particularly in summer. Heat slows everything and a piano is the least forgiving item to be tired around.

Midweek and mid-month are quieter and easier to schedule.

The thing not to economise on

The crew size and the equipment. A piano moved with too few people or without a proper board is how instruments and backs get damaged, and the saving is nothing against either.
