Disassembly is the least glamorous part of moving furniture and one of the few places where a small amount of work reliably saves money. A dismantled bed takes a fraction of the space, goes through a doorway without argument, and is far less likely to be damaged in transit.

What should nearly always come apart

Bed frames. Every time. A made-up bed is one of the largest objects in a house and one of the easiest to reduce.

Table legs, where they unbolt. A dining table on its side with the legs off is a flat panel rather than a problem.

Sectional sofas. They are designed to separate and people forget. Look underneath for the clips.

Modular shelving and anything wall-mounted.

Mirrors from dressers, which are usually a few screws and are otherwise the most breakable thing in the room.

Desk returns, bed drawers and any bolt-on component.

What should not

Flat-pack furniture that is already assembled. This is the important exception. Particleboard and cam-lock fittings lose their grip once undone, and a piece taken apart and rebuilt is frequently looser than before, sometimes permanently.

If it will fit through the door assembled, move it assembled. If it will not, be realistic: it may not survive the round trip, and that changes whether it is worth moving at all.

Anything antique with joinery rather than fittings. Old furniture is held together by glue and joints that were never meant to be undone. Leave it to somebody who knows what they are looking at.

Recliners and sofa beds, generally. The mechanisms are heavy and awkward and are usually better handled whole.

Do it properly

Bag the fittings for each item separately and tape the bag to the piece itself, not into a box of hardware that ends up somewhere else. A bed frame with no bolts is not a bed.

Photograph anything complicated before you take it apart. Ten seconds now, and it is what you will want at eleven at night in a new house.

Keep the tools out rather than packing them, and put them in the vehicle that travels with you.

What this saves

Space on the truck, which on a long move is what you pay for. Time on the day, since a crew is not solving puzzles in a stairwell. And damage, because most furniture harm happens when something is forced through an opening it does not fit.
