Why down is harder than up

People assume taking a safe down a flight of stairs is the easier direction. It is the more dangerous one, and it is worth understanding why before you consider doing it yourself.

Going up, gravity resists you the whole way. Progress is slow and it stops the moment you stop pushing. Going down, gravity is helping, and a dense object with a high centre of mass that starts moving on a staircase does not stop because someone changed their mind. There is nowhere to set it down mid-flight and nothing to grab.

Basement stairs make this harder in three specific ways. They are frequently steeper than the main staircase in the same house. They very often turn, sometimes twice. And in older houses they can be noticeably narrower, because they were built as service stairs rather than as a route for furniture.

The other thing basements bring is what is at the top. A route out through a finished basement, up narrow stairs, along a hallway and out a door with a threshold is four separate constraints in a row, and the tightest one governs.

What to sort out before the day

Empty the safe completely. It removes real weight, it stops contents shifting inside a top-heavy object, and it means the contents are not our responsibility in transit. This matters more than anything else on the list.

Find the weight if you can, or the make and model so we can look it up. Manufacturer weights vary far more than people expect between models that look similar, and the difference decides the crew and the equipment.

Measure the narrowest point on the whole route, not just the doorway, and count the stairs and the turns. Photographs of the staircase and the route out are the single most useful thing you can send.

Tell us about the flooring too. Concentrated weight is harder on tile than most people realize, and protecting the route is part of the job rather than an afterthought. Floor runners and proper equipment go down before the safe moves at all.
