Most safe placement is a compromise with a house that already exists. If you are building, or buying before completion, you have an opportunity that almost nobody uses: deciding where the safe goes while the decision is still cheap.

Decide before the walls are closed

Three things are worth raising with a builder, and all of them are simple during construction and expensive afterwards.

Where it is going, structurally. A safe concentrates a great deal of weight into a small footprint. On a ground floor over a slab that is rarely a concern. Anywhere else it deserves proper thought, and during construction that question can be answered by the people who are already engineering the floor. Afterwards it involves opening things up.

The route to get it there. A closet that fits a safe is no use if the doorway into the room does not. Doorway widths are a choice during framing and a demolition job later. If you know the safe's dimensions, give them to the builder rather than assuming a standard door will do.

Anchoring. If it is being bolted to a slab, that is straightforward. If it is going anywhere else, ask what it will be fixed into before the finishes go on.

If the house is already done

The usual constraints apply. Measure the narrowest point of the whole route, not just the front door. Tell us what the flooring is, because concentrated weight is harder on tile than people expect and protection goes down before anything moves.

Retailer delivery generally stops at the driveway or garage, which is where most of these calls come from. Decide the final position before delivery day, because a safe standing in a garage will not casually relocate later.

Ask your builder whether a newly poured driveway is cured enough for a loaded vehicle. Occasionally it is not, which changes where the truck sits.

Moving an existing safe

Empty it completely. It removes real weight, stops contents shifting inside something already top-heavy, and means the contents are never our responsibility in transit.

Find the weight or the make and model, since manufacturer figures vary widely between similar-looking safes. Say at booking whether it is anchored.
