A lot of newer homes here are built with a separate suite intended for a parent or an adult family member: its own entrance, sometimes a kitchenette, designed rather than converted.

It is a genuinely good arrangement, and the fact that the space is purpose-built solves the practical half of the problem while leaving the other half entirely intact.

The practical half is easier than usual

Unlike a converted basement, a designed suite usually has proper access: a level or gently stepped entrance, doorways sized for furniture, and a route that does not involve a narrow original staircase.

Still measure before deciding what comes. Suites vary enormously and a bedroom in one is not the size of a bedroom in another. Measure the rooms and the route in, including any turn.

The common miscalculation is storage. A suite has closets; it does not have a garage, a basement and a loft. Whatever was absorbing decades of accumulation in the old house has no equivalent, and that is usually the largest category of things that cannot come.

The other half

Somebody is still leaving a house they ran. Even into a well-designed space in a family they love, that is a loss of independence, and the small decisions about their own rooms are among the few things left fully within their control.

Let them make those decisions, including the ones you would make differently, and including the ones that seem impractical to you.

Bring the furniture they actually use: their own bed, their own chair, the table they eat at. Familiar things are what make a space theirs rather than a guest suite, and that matters more than whether something newer is available in the house.

Boundaries, decided early

Worth agreeing before the move rather than discovering afterwards: which space is whose, how meals work, what the expectations are about coming and going. Not our business, and the moves that go well are consistently the ones where those conversations happened in advance.

It also affects the move practically. If the suite is genuinely self-contained, more kitchen equipment comes. If meals are shared, much less does.
