Apartment moving advice tends to assume a downtown tower with a freight elevator and a booking sheet. Most complexes in West Valley City are nothing like that. They are garden-style buildings of two or three storeys, external staircases, a shared lot, and often a gate.

That produces a different set of problems, and they are easier ones, as long as somebody thinks about them before the day.

The lot is the constraint

In a walk-up complex the distance from where a truck can legally and physically sit to your door is the single biggest factor in how long the move takes. It is usually further than residents believe, because nobody walks that route carrying a dresser except on moving day.

Walk it yourself before you book and be honest about it. Is there somewhere a truck can pull in near your building, or is the nearest legal spot at the far end of the lot? Are there speed bumps, a narrow entrance, a low branch, a covered carport with a height limit that a truck cannot pass under? Low clearances catch people out constantly.

If the complex has a gate, we need the code or a fob arrangement, and it needs to work on the day. A code that changed last month, or one that only opens the resident side, is a crew sitting outside a gate on your time.

Stairs, and the turn

An external staircase to a second or third floor is a straightforward carry, just a slow one, and it is priced into the crew size rather than being a problem. Tell us the floor and whether there is a landing.

The thing worth mentioning specifically is the turn at the top or bottom, and the width of the door at the end of it. That is what stops sofas and mattresses, not the stairs. If something was difficult to get in, say so, because it will be at least as difficult to get out.

In winter, those external stairs need clearing and salting before the crew arrives. That is on the complex in theory and worth checking in practice, because an uncleared metal staircase is genuinely dangerous with furniture on it.

Before you book

Ask the office three things: where the truck can go, whether moves need to be booked or are restricted to certain hours, and whether they want anything from the moving company. Some managed complexes ask for a certificate of insurance, which we can provide, and which takes longer to process on their side than anyone expects.

Standard furniture disassembly and reassembly is included, which matters in apartments more than anywhere, since flat-packed furniture often will not come out any other way.
