Clear-Outs That Need Handling Carefully

A proportion of the clear-outs we are asked about are difficult in ways that have nothing to do with how much there is. A home where things accumulated over decades. A family stepping in after a health crisis. A property where somebody has been living in conditions they would not have chosen and would rather nobody saw.

These jobs are handled badly quite often, and it is worth saying what handling them properly looks like.

The crew's manner is the whole job

Nothing said, in the house or in the van afterwards. No photographs. No commentary about what is being removed or how it got there.

The person whose home it is already knows, and frequently feels considerably worse about it than anybody arriving does. A crew that treats it as a normal job is doing something genuinely valuable.

Pace, and who decides

The instinct is to clear as fast as possible. With a hoarding situation that is usually wrong and sometimes actively harmful.

If the person is present and involved, they set the pace and they make the decisions. Removing things faster than somebody can process is how a clear-out ends badly and how families end up estranged over it.

Staged work over several visits is often the right answer, even though it costs more than one day would.

Look for what matters before it goes

Documents, cash, jewellery, photographs and medication turn up in unlikely places in these homes. In amongst papers, in tins, inside furniture.

Anything that might matter gets set aside and shown to the family rather than judged from the truck. This is not a courtesy; it happens regularly.

Conditions and honesty about them

Some properties have pest, mould or biohazard issues that are outside what a hauling crew should handle. If we find that, we will tell you plainly and say what kind of specialist is needed rather than working around it.

That is not us declining work. It is the difference between a clear-out and a remediation, and doing the second badly makes things worse.
