What a Neighbour's Recommendation Actually Tells You

In an established neighbourhood the first thing most people do is ask around, and that is sensible. It is also less informative than it feels, because moving is a job where the experience depends heavily on circumstances that differ between houses.

Just-In-Time Moving is locally owned and works throughout West Valley City and Salt Lake County. Referrals are how most of our work arrives, and here is how to use one properly.

What a referral genuinely tells you

That the company turned up, did the work, and did not create a situation somebody is still annoyed about. That is worth a great deal and it filters out most of what goes wrong.

It also tells you about the things that do not vary much: whether people were careful, whether they communicated, whether the final figure matched the quote.

What it does not tell you

Whether they can do your house. A straightforward single-storey move with a driveway says little about a townhome with two flights and a shared lot, or a basement full of furniture.

Whether they can do your date. Your neighbour moved in October. You are moving on the last Saturday in July.

Who will actually come. Crews change, particularly across a season.

The questions worth asking the person recommending

Not whether they were happy, which everybody says. Ask specifics.

Did the final figure match the estimate? The single most useful question, and the most common source of complaints across the industry.

What did they do that you did not expect? Good and bad. This is where the real information is.

Was anything damaged, and how was it handled? The handling matters more than the damage.

Would you use them for something harder? A revealing question, because it separates satisfaction from confidence.

Then check the basics anyway

Licensing and insurance shown rather than asserted, a written estimate, and whether they asked you about stairs, parking and heavy items. A referral is not a substitute for those; it just means you are starting from a shorter list.

And be a little careful about recommendations that come with an incentive attached. Referral schemes are common and entirely legitimate, and they do mean the person recommending has a small stake in your decision. It does not make the recommendation worthless. It is simply worth knowing, and worth asking, because it changes how much weight a strong endorsement should carry compared with one from somebody who has nothing to gain from it.
