When people hire labour without a truck, they usually think they are buying muscle. They are mostly buying loading, and it is the part that determines whether everything arrives intact.

Weight low and forward

The heaviest items go on the floor and toward the cab, not spread evenly and never toward the back.

Weight behind the rear axle makes a truck unstable at speed and is the reason rental trucks sway. Weight at the front is carried by the vehicle the way it was designed to be.

Build in tiers, wall to wall

A truck is loaded as a series of vertical sections, each one filled floor to ceiling and side to side, and each one strapped before the next begins.

That is what stops movement. A load that fills the truck loosely has room to shift; a load built in tiers cannot move because there is nowhere for it to go.

Most rental trucks have anchor rails along the walls specifically for this. They are rarely used by people moving themselves.

Heavy on the bottom, light on top

Obvious, and violated constantly under time pressure at the end of the day, when whatever is left goes wherever it fits.

Appliances and case furniture at the base. Boxes stacked heaviest to lightest. Nothing fragile bearing weight. Mattresses and mirrors flat against a wall, upright, tied.

Fill every gap

Voids are where damage happens. Soft items, bedding and cushions go into the spaces between furniture, which is both efficient and protective.

Anything that can slide will, so nothing should have room to.

Load in reverse order of unloading

The last things in are the first things out. Beds and anything needed that first night should not be behind everything else at the front of the truck.

What this saves you

A well-loaded truck usually needs one trip rather than two, which on a longer move is fuel and hours, and on a local one is an entire afternoon.

It also means arriving with furniture that has not been rubbing against a wall for forty minutes.

How to use a crew economically

Do the packing and the carrying of boxes yourself over the preceding days. Book a crew for the loading window only, and again at the far end if you want it.

Have the truck on site, ramp out, route clear, and everything staged near the door before the crew starts. Paid time spent waiting for you to finish taping boxes is the commonest waste on a labour-only job.
