What a Home Move Really Costs in Salt Lake City, Utah

People choose a mover by comparing quotes, which is reasonable, and it measures a fraction of what a move costs. Most of the money a move can waste never appears on any invoice.

The costs that are not on the quote

Moving things you then get rid of. The largest and most avoidable. Anything unwanted costs three times: packing it, transporting it, and disposing of it from a house you have only just arrived in. A garage and a basement are usually a real share of a household's volume and almost none of it is furniture you want in the next place.

A lost deposit. If you are leaving a rental, the marks that appear on move-out day come off your deposit, and doorframes, hallway corners and stair-height walls are where they happen. Protection costs nothing when it is planned and a great deal when it is not.

Damage from a move done too cheaply. A truck packed with gaps shifts on the road. A dresser carried down icy steps by tired friends does not always arrive. These are real costs and they land after the saving has been banked.

Your own time. A move that takes three days instead of one is two days of somebody's life, and if that somebody takes leave to do it, it has a number attached.

The levers you actually control

In order of how much they matter.

Get rid of things first. Weeks ahead, starting with the garage, basement and storage. Nothing else on this list comes close.

Be completely finished packing. A crew that arrives to a half-packed house either waits or packs, and both are billed. This is the second largest lever and the most commonly squandered.

Describe the access accurately when you are quoted. Stairs, parking, the carry from the truck, anything heavy. A crew sized correctly finishes sooner than one sized optimistically, and an estimate built on a hopeful description gets corrected on the day, never downward.

Be flexible on timing if you can. Month end and summer are the busiest, so availability is tighter. Midweek and mid-month is easier.
