Winter is the part to think about
A commute that is easy in September is different in January. Snow, ice and dark mornings all lengthen it, and an early class means leaving in conditions that require clearing a car first.
Budget the time realistically, and make sure the vehicle is genuinely up to it before winter rather than during.
Keeping the move itself cheap
Move the boxes by car over the preceding week and book a crew for a short window for the furniture only.
Share the booking with others moving the same day. Buy furniture secondhand at term end when students are leaving and prices are soft.
Book ahead in the turnover weeks, when crews and trucks run out entirely.
Before you sign
Ask what is included, what the winter heating actually costs, and what the parking arrangement is. Then photograph everything on move-in day.
