Understand what your entitlement covers before arranging anything

The first and most important step, and the one people skip because a move feels urgent.

Where a move is covered under orders, there is an established process and arranging your own move outside it can affect what is reimbursed. If you intend to move yourself and claim, find out what the rules require, what documentation is needed, and what weight is authorised, before you book anybody.

Speak to the transportation or relocation office rather than relying on what somebody said. The details change and they are specific to your circumstances.

Keep every receipt and weight ticket regardless.

Where a commercial mover fits

Plenty of situations sit outside a covered move: a local move between houses in the area, a partial move, storage, a spouse relocating separately, or work that an entitlement does not extend to.

That is ordinary commercial work and we quote it like any other job. Ask for the estimate in writing, and if you need a certificate of insurance for a complex, ask early since processing is slow.

The academic side

If somebody in the household is studying, get advice from the institution early rather than assuming.

Ask about withdrawal deadlines and refunds if a move comes mid-term, whether coursework can continue remotely, how credits transfer if a change of institution is coming, and whether there are provisions for students in military families. Many places have them and they are not always advertised.

Ask about residency status for tuition too, since that can be affected by a move and is a substantial sum.

Practical points for a household with children

School records requested and transferred before the move rather than after. Medical and dental records the same.

Keep documents, orders, medication and anything irreplaceable with you rather than on a truck.

Photograph valuable items with serial numbers before they are packed, and understand which valuation level applies to your goods, since the basic level is settled by weight rather than value.
