Moving Back Home After School

Common, sensible, and worth handling deliberately rather than arriving with a car full of boxes and no plan.

Moving back in with parents after finishing a course, between jobs, or to save for something is ordinary and increasingly common. It is also a move people plan less carefully than any other, because it does not feel like a real one.

A few things make it go considerably better.

Just-In-Time Moving is locally owned and works throughout Roy and Weber County.

Do not bring everything

The commonest mistake. A student household is furniture and equipment for an independent life, and almost none of it fits into a bedroom in somebody else's house.

Be honest about what there is space for. A bed you will not use, a sofa, a dining table and a full kitchen are going into a garage where they will sit for two years and then be disposed of.

Sell the furniture at term end while there are buyers, which is the one week of the year when demand exists. Keep what is genuinely good, anything with meaning, and the things you will need again immediately.

Decide about storage properly

Storage is reasonable for a decision with a date on it. It is expensive for a decision nobody wants to make.

If you rent a unit, put a review date in the calendar and price the full period rather than the monthly figure. Units taken at this point in life are frequently still rented three years later, costing more than their contents are worth.

A garage corner at a parent's house is not free either. It is worth agreeing explicitly how much space and for how long, rather than letting it become a source of low-level friction.

Agree the terms before you arrive

Not a moving question, and the thing that determines how it goes.

Talk about how long, whether you are contributing to costs, what you are responsible for in the house, and what the expectations are about coming and going. Vague arrangements between adults who used to be parent and child are where the difficulty is.

Having that conversation before you move in is far easier than after.

Keep the practical things updated

Change your address properly rather than relying on it being your old family home. Bank, licence, voter registration, insurance, and anywhere that holds records for you.

Update the university with a permanent address for transcripts and anything arriving later.

The move itself

Usually small. Do the boxes by car and book a short hourly job for the furniture, or for a run to storage.

The estimate is free and in writing, and if you do not need us we will say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I bring my furniture?

Mostly no. A student household furnishes an independent life and almost none of it fits into a bedroom in somebody else's house. Sell at term end while buyers exist, and keep only what is genuinely good or needed immediately.

Is a storage unit a good idea?

For a decision with a date on it, yes. For a decision nobody wants to make, it is expensive. Price the full period rather than the monthly figure, since units taken at this stage are often still rented three years later.

What should be agreed in advance?

How long, whether you are contributing to costs, what you are responsible for in the house, and expectations about coming and going. Vague arrangements between adults who used to be parent and child are where the friction comes from.
