What is actually different

You have a real household: furniture, appliances, a kitchen that gets used, and considerably more than one person's belongings.

You also have constraints a traditional student does not. A job with fixed hours. Possibly children and a school run. A partner whose schedule matters. And a term that does not pause because you are moving.

The result is that time, not money, is usually the binding constraint, and that changes the right answer.

Move at the right point in the term

The single most useful decision. Between semesters, or in a reading week, rather than in the middle of a busy few weeks.

If you must move in term, take two days rather than one and do not schedule anything demanding on either side of it. People routinely underestimate how much a move costs them in working capacity for the following week.

Buy back time where you can

The instinct on a tight budget is to do everything yourself. Where you are also working and studying, that is frequently a false economy.

A sensible middle: do the packing yourself over several weeks, in small sessions, and hire a crew for the whole moving day rather than only the heavy items. You lose a little money and you gain the day.

If the budget is genuinely tight, hire for the furniture and appliances only and move the boxes yourself.

Set up what you need first

At the far end, prioritise differently from a household move: beds, one bathroom, a working kitchen, and then your study space.

Getting a desk and a reliable internet connection working on day one matters more than unpacking the living room, and it is the thing that gets left to last.

Test the internet in the room you intend to work in before committing to it.

Practical points

Keep coursework, a laptop, chargers and anything with a deadline in a box that travels with you rather than on the truck.

Arrange childcare for the hours a crew is there. It is faster and it is safer.
