Booking a Mover for a Date That Cannot Move

Family moves cluster. School holidays, the end of a month, the summer, and particularly the last weekend of a summer month, which is the single most contested slot in the calendar.

If your date is fixed, capacity matters as much as quality, and it is a different question that most people never ask.

The questions about capacity

Are you confirmed for my date, or provisional? Ask plainly, and ask for confirmation in writing. There is a real difference between a date held and a date pencilled.

How many crews do you run, and what happens if one is unavailable? A vehicle failure or somebody unwell is not exotic. Ask what the plan is. An honest answer might be that there is limited backup, which is useful to know if your date is immovable.

Am I the only job that day, or the second? If a crew is coming to you after finishing elsewhere, ask what happens if the first job overruns. It is a fair question and the answer shapes your morning.

What you can do about it

Book early for a fixed date. Further ahead than feels necessary for anything at month end or in summer.

Say your date is immovable. It changes how a job is scheduled, and there is no advantage in a company thinking you are flexible when you are not.

Offer flexibility where you genuinely have it. If any day that week works, saying so widens your options considerably and often gets you a better slot.

Confirm the week before. A short call reconfirming date, arrival window and details is worth making, and any decent company would rather you did.

One thing worth deciding before you need to: what you would do if the date fell through at short notice. It is uncommon and it is not impossible, and families with a closing or a lease handover have no slack at all. Knowing which of your dates has any give, and having a second option in mind rather than starting from nothing on the morning, converts a crisis into an inconvenience. It costs nothing to have thought about it for five minutes.
