Ask a Commercial Mover for a Reference Like Yours

Every commercial mover will say they handle business relocations. The useful question is narrower: have they done a business like yours, in a building like yours, with the same constraints.

Ask for a specific reference

Not a testimonial. A business you could ring, ideally in the same broad category as yours: a warehouse if you are a warehouse, a clinic if you are a clinic, a retail unit if you are retail.

The constraints differ so much between those that experience in one says relatively little about another. Moving pallet racking and moving a dental practice have almost nothing in common except a truck.

Not every company can produce a reference, particularly for a specific sector, and the willingness to try tells you something either way.

What to ask the reference

Did the operation restart when it was supposed to? The only question that really matters for a business move.

What went wrong, and how was it handled? Something always does.

Did the final figure match the estimate?

Would you use them again for something harder?

What to ask the company directly

How would you sequence our move? The answer reveals whether they think about business moves as logistics or as furniture. A good one talks about what has to be operational first and works backwards.

Will you walk both sites before quoting? For anything beyond a small office, a quote without seeing both is a guess.

What do you need from us? A specific list, covering layout, labelling, unusual equipment and building constraints, means they have done this. Vagueness means the planning happens during your move.

What is not your job? A straight answer covers anything anchored, plumbed, gassed or calibrated, which needs specialist disconnection booked separately. A company that volunteers that is being honest with you.

One last check that costs nothing: ask who would be your point of contact on the night, and speak to them before you book rather than meeting them at eight in the evening. On a commercial move that person makes more difference to how the job runs than the company's general reputation does, and five minutes on the phone tells you whether they understand what you are trying to achieve or simply what needs carrying.
