What a Hauling Crew Cannot Legally Take
The list is longer than most people expect, and finding out on the day is the expensive way.
Get a Free Quote Call (435) 862-3080Every hauling company has a list of things it will not take, and it is not squeamishness. Waste facilities refuse them, some carry legal handling requirements, and a truck that arrives at a transfer station with restricted material in the load has a real problem.
Knowing the list in advance means you deal with those items separately rather than discovering them mid-job.
Just-In-Time Moving hauls across West Valley City and Salt Lake County. We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance.
Household chemicals
Paint, thinners, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, cleaning products, fertiliser. Salt Lake County runs household hazardous waste collection, which is where these go.
One exception worth knowing: fully dried latex paint is often acceptable as ordinary waste. Leave the lid off in a ventilated space until it is solid, and it stops being a hazardous item.
Automotive
Motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, petrol, and car batteries. Most of these are taken back free by shops that sell them, which is genuinely the easiest route.
Fuel in mowers, generators and strimmers should be drained before the equipment is hauled.
Pressurised and flammable
Propane tanks of any size, oxygen and helium cylinders, fire extinguishers, and aerosols in quantity. Propane exchange points take tanks; a single aerosol in a bin of household waste is not the concern, a box of them is.

Asbestos and anything suspected
Old floor tiles, pipe lagging, some textured ceiling material and certain siding in properties built before the 1980s. This requires testing and licensed abatement, and a general hauling crew must not disturb it. If you are unsure about material in an older West Valley City home, stop and have it tested before anything is removed.
Other common refusals
Tyres, which most facilities charge separately for and some will not accept at all.
Medical waste and sharps, which have their own disposal route.
Ammunition and anything explosive, which is a police matter rather than a waste one.
Televisions and monitors in some cases, and always as electronic waste rather than general.
Ask before the day
If something is on this list or you are not sure, say so when you book. We will tell you where it goes, and there is no charge for the question. It is a considerably better outcome than a crew declining an item with the truck already half loaded.

Frequently Asked Questions
What chemicals can you not take?
Paint, thinners, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals and fertiliser, which go to Salt Lake County household hazardous waste collection. Fully dried latex paint is often acceptable as ordinary waste once it has solidified with the lid off.
What about propane tanks and extinguishers?
Pressurised cylinders of any kind cannot be hauled, including propane, oxygen, helium and fire extinguishers. Propane exchange points take tanks, and equipment such as mowers and generators should be drained of fuel first.
What if I suspect asbestos?
Stop and have it tested before anything is removed. Old floor tiles, pipe lagging and some textured ceiling material in pre-1980s homes are candidates, and it requires licensed abatement rather than a general hauling crew.
