Retail

A retail move is really three moves stacked together: fixtures, stock and everything behind the scenes.

Fixtures are the constraint. Shelving, gondolas, display units and counters usually have to come apart, and how they come apart determines how quickly the new space becomes a shop. Photograph the current layout before anything is dismantled and label components by where they are going in the new store, not by where they came from in the old one.

Stock is a volume and sequencing problem. Run inventory down before the move if you possibly can. It is the cheapest saving available on any retail move and it is routinely left too late to act on.

The sequence matters more than the speed. Get the space to a state where it can trade, then finish the back rooms. A stockroom in boxes is survivable; a shop floor in boxes is not.

Clinics and practices

Medical and dental practices bring two extra considerations, and both need deciding before the move rather than during it.

Equipment that is anchored, plumbed or calibrated is specialist work at both ends. Chairs, imaging equipment, sterilisers and anything similar need their own arrangements booked separately and in advance. Records need a decided chain of custody. Who packs them, who seals the containers, who signs for them at the other end, and where they sit while everything else is being placed. Decide it in advance and write it down. Nobody should be improvising that on a Saturday night.

The parts everyone forgets

Signage, keys, alarm codes, and who is on site to lock up. Whether the landlord or property manager wants a certificate of insurance, which we can provide and which takes longer to process on their side than anyone plans for.

And a nominated person, present, empowered to answer questions on the night. Every commercial move produces a trickle of small unanticipated decisions, and having someone there who can simply make them is usually what keeps a move on schedule.
