A safe concentrates a great deal of weight into a very small footprint. Ordinary residential floors are designed for distributed load, not for several hundred or a thousand pounds standing on roughly four square feet.

On a ground floor over a slab this is rarely a concern. Above a basement or on an upper storey it genuinely deserves consideration, and the honest position is that a moving company is not the right party to answer it.

The people who can are a structural engineer or, in a newer house, sometimes the builder, who has the framing drawings. It is a small consultation against a large consequence, and where we think it is worth doing we will say so rather than simply carrying the thing upstairs because you asked.

If it is going upstairs, positioning matters: near a bearing wall rather than in the middle of a span is the general principle, and that is exactly the sort of thing worth asking about.

Getting it there

Stairs with a safe are slow, deliberate work. The turn and the ceiling height above it matter as much as the width, and downward is always the more dangerous direction because gravity is assisting.

Photographs of the flight, the turn and the landing are worth more than measurements alone.

Tell us what the flooring is along the route. Concentrated weight is harder on tile than people expect, and protection goes down before anything moves.

Empty it completely. It removes real weight, stops contents shifting inside something already top-heavy, and means the contents are never our responsibility in transit.

Find the weight or the make and model, since manufacturer figures vary widely between similar-looking safes. Give that figure to anybody you consult about the floor.

Say at booking whether it is anchored, or is being anchored at the destination.
