Write it down at the start

Five minutes at move-in saves a difficult conversation later.

Make a list of what each person brought, and a separate list of anything bought jointly with who paid what. Photograph the shared items. Put it somewhere everyone can find it, not in one person's messages.

Agree in advance what happens to jointly bought things when somebody leaves. Bought out at a share, sold, or stays with the household. Deciding it now, when nobody is leaving, is easy. Deciding it when somebody is leaving is not.

Splitting the cost

Sorting out payment with a crew standing in the doorway is nobody's idea of a good afternoon.

Small moves are billed on the crew's time and access dominates: which floor, whether there is a lift, and how far a truck can park from the door.

Be completely packed before the crew arrives. Label by destination room.
