This should happen before any other sorting, because it is the part that depends on other people and therefore takes the longest.

Contact everybody whose things are in the house. Tell them what is there, tell them when the move is, and give a date by which it needs collecting. A real date, not a general request.

Then say clearly what happens to anything not collected by then, and be specific. Without that, items sit in a house for months while everybody waits for a decision nobody has made, and the person who ends up making it under pressure is the one who was trying to move.

Photographs help enormously. People cannot decide about a box they cannot see, and sending a picture removes most of the excuses for delay.

Then the rest

Sort into three destinations: what comes, what goes to family, what is cleared. Two-way sorting stalls because the difficult items are exactly the ones that are neither.

Measure the new place before sorting rather than after, because it changes which pieces are worth keeping and it is much easier to decide once than twice.

Start with the basement and the garage. They hold the most volume, produce the hardest decisions, and get skipped when a deadline arrives, which is how people end up paying to move things across town that they then pay again to dispose of.

On the day
