The four categories

Exercise equipment. A treadmill, a rowing machine, a weight bench. Bought with intent, used for a while, now large and heavy and worth very little. This is the single most common item in a basement clear-out and it is also one of the more awkward to move, so mention it when you call.

Superseded electronics. Old televisions, computers, printers, cables, things kept because throwing away something that still works feels wrong. It is worth asking us about specific items when you call, since some things need a different disposal route from general household waste.

Children's things, after the children. Furniture, toys, boxes from bedrooms that were packed up when somebody left home. This is the hardest category emotionally and the easiest practically, and the useful move is to give whoever it belongs to a real deadline to collect it. Without a deadline it sits for years.

The someday pile. Materials for a project, a chair to be reupholstered, spare tiles. Ask the honest question: has the project moved in five years? If not, the answer is clear even if it is unwelcome.

What changes a quote

Not volume alone. Basement stairs are the big factor here, since they are frequently steeper and narrower than the main staircase and often turn. A basement clear-out is a meaningfully different job from the same volume in an open garage.

Dense material is the other one. Old exercise equipment, cast iron, tile and construction leftovers weigh far more than they look.

Photographs are usually enough to quote, and should include the route out as well as the pile.

Practical

Separate anything you are keeping and put it somewhere else entirely. A pile that is entirely going is faster to load and impossible to get wrong.

Hazardous material, which covers paint, solvents, chemicals and fuel, needs a different route and is not something we can haul. Basements usually have some. Ask when you call rather than on the day.
