Do the arithmetic before booking

Measure the new rooms and be strict about the large items. A sectional, a dining table with leaves, a large dresser, a desk. Measure the route in as well as the room, including a lift if there is one, because a piece that fits the room is no use if it will not reach it.

Then decide, item by item, before move day. This is the part people defer and it is the expensive one: move everything, fill the apartment, and then solve the problem again while living among furniture that does not fit.

Four destinations, and every large item needs one: it comes, it goes to family, it goes into storage, or it goes. Storage is worth questioning hardest, because it is a recurring cost against a one-off saving and things put into units indefinitely tend to stay there.

What apartments do not have

Worth thinking about explicitly, because these are the things a house absorbs without anyone noticing.

Garage and yard equipment. Tools, ladders, the lawnmower, the hose reel, the snow shovel, the barbecue if it is not permitted. Seasonal decorations, which in a house live somewhere nobody counts.

Bulk storage generally. A house has a garage, a basement and a loft absorbing years of accumulation. An apartment has a closet.

These are usually the largest single category of things that cannot come, and they are the ones nobody has thought about until the day.

The building side

Ask three things before you book: whether moves have to be booked into a slot or are restricted to certain hours, where the truck can actually go and how far that is from the door, and whether they want a certificate of insurance from the moving company, which we can provide and which takes longer to process on their side than anyone expects.

Photograph the apartment when you move in, including any existing marks, and keep those somewhere you will still have them in a year.
