Number the boxes

The single most useful habit, and almost nobody does it.

Give every box a number as you seal it, written large on two sides. Keep a list, on paper or your phone, of the number and roughly what is in it. Not an inventory of every item, just enough: 34, kitchen, baking things and the mixer.

It takes ten seconds a box. It means that when you need the mixer in three weeks, you look at a list instead of opening eleven boxes. It also means that at the far end you know if a box has not arrived, which a stack of unnumbered boxes will never tell you.

The destination room still goes on the box as well. The number is for you; the room is for the crew.

Pack in the right order

Start with what you will not miss and work toward what you use. Off-season clothing, which in this climate is a large category. Books. Decorative items. Spare rooms. The garage and storage areas, which hold the most volume and the least urgency and are reliably left until last.

Leave the kitchen, bedding, toiletries and anything you use weekly until the final days.

Do not pack anything you might need for the house sale or the move itself: paperwork, tools, cleaning things, the vacuum. Those want to be findable to the end.

Set up a staging area

In a big house, decide where sealed boxes live and put them all there rather than leaving them in the rooms they came from. A garage or a spare room works. It keeps the house usable, it makes loading day faster, and it stops the slow spread of boxes into every room that makes a house feel like a warehouse for a month.

Keep the aisle clear and do not stack higher than you can lift safely.

The rules that always apply

Fill every box to the top so it does not crush. Small boxes for heavy things, large for light. Plates on edge like records. Label on the side rather than the top.
