This sounds obvious and it is the thing most often left unsaid. A crew that knows a piece is a family heirloom handles it differently from one that assumes it is a dresser, not because the care would otherwise be careless but because the approach changes: more wrapping, more hands, a slower route, and a deliberate decision about whether it travels alone.

What is different about old furniture

Older pieces behave unlike modern ones and the differences matter in transit.

Joints are often glued rather than fixed, and glue that is a century old has usually dried out. That means a piece can be sound standing still and loose when lifted, and it is why old furniture is lifted from its structural base rather than by a rail, an arm or a top.

Veneer lifts. It is thin, it is brittle with age, and it does not tolerate pressure from a strap in the wrong place or a wrapped surface rubbing over a long journey.

Drawers and doors need securing, and not with tape directly on an old finish, which can pull the surface when it comes off.

Marble and stone tops come off the base and travel on edge, supported along their length. Carried flat and unsupported across the middle is how they crack.

Mirrors and glass in old furniture are frequently original and irreplaceable, so those come out where they can.

Practical

Photograph the piece before it moves, including any existing damage. That is worth having regardless and takes a minute.

Measure the route at both ends, and note whether the piece was assembled in the room. Old furniture is often built to come apart in ways modern furniture is not, which can be an advantage if we know.

Tell us if the destination is upstairs or down a few steps, because that changes the approach rather than only the time.
