For most moves you judge a company on logistics. For this one the logistics are usually simple and the difficulty is entirely in how the day is handled, which is harder to assess and more important.

What to ask, and what the answers reveal

What happens if we are not finished deciding on the day? The single best question. The right answer is that the crew works at the household's pace and a second trip is better than a wrong decision. An answer about efficiency or scheduling tells you what that day would feel like.

Do you do many of these? Downsizing moves are not just smaller house moves. A company that does them regularly will talk about pace, about the basement, about family coordination, without being prompted.

Will you build and make the bed first? A specific request, and how readily it is accommodated is informative. On this kind of move it matters more than anything else that happens.

Who will actually come? The same crew working together, or whoever is available. On a day requiring patience, that is not a trivial distinction.

Warning signs

Pressure to book quickly. Reluctance to discuss anything other than volume and price. Impatience on the phone, which will not improve on the day.

And a quote given without questions, which for a downsizing move usually means nobody asked about the basement, and the basement is the job.

The practical checks too

Licensing and insurance shown rather than asserted. A written estimate. Whether the company performs the move itself.

If the destination is a managed building or a senior community, ask whether they handle certificates of insurance routinely, because those buildings almost always require one and their processing is slow.

One last thing that is worth more than any of the checks: talk to the company yourself rather than only reading about them. Five minutes on the phone tells you most of what you need. You will hear whether they are interested in the situation or only in the booking, whether they ask about the person as well as the furniture, and whether they are willing to say something is difficult. Those are the qualities that determine how the day goes, and none of them appear in a listing.
