The four options

Take it. For anything genuinely good, personal, irreplaceable, or expensive to buy again. This is a shorter list than most people's instinct suggests.

Sell it. Works for furniture in decent condition, appliances, and anything with a straightforward local market. Start earlier than you think. Selling takes weeks and the last fortnight before a move is not when you want to be arranging collections with strangers. Be honest in listings about access, and expect buyers to collect.

Store it. The option people default to and the one worth questioning hardest. Storage is a recurring cost against a one-off saving, and things left in a unit indefinitely tend to stay there. It genuinely suits a specific case: you are moving temporarily, or to somewhere smaller for a defined period, and you know when you are coming back. Absent that, be careful.

Get rid of it. Cheaper than moving it and cheaper than storing it. Anything you would not pay to transport across the country belongs here.

The furniture question specifically

Large furniture is where the money is on a long move, because it is bulk. Be honest about each significant piece: is it good, does it fit the new place, and would you buy it again today at what it costs to move?

Flat-pack furniture that has been disassembled once is usually not worth the journey. It rarely survives a second rebuild well.

Practical points

The move is quoted per job rather than hourly, after an actual look at what you own, which produces both a written price and an inventory. That inventory is what you will want at the far end.

Fuel, propane, paint, solvents and aerosols cannot ship. Plants often should not and in some cases cannot cross state lines. Documents, jewellery, medication and anything irreplaceable travel with you.

One decision worth making early rather than late: what happens to anything you are still undecided about on loading day. There is always something. Having agreed in advance that undecided items do not go, and that they will be dealt with separately, is far better than making that call with a crew waiting and a truck half full. Deciding under pressure at the door is how people end up shipping things across the country that they throw away six weeks later.
