Moving a unit within a shopping centre or a shared retail development is a different exercise from moving a standalone business, and the difference is that a lot of the constraints are not yours to set.

Centre management sets the terms

Before anything else, get the rules in writing from the centre. They will exist and they will be enforced.

The usual list: permitted hours for moves, which service entrance or loading area to use, whether the service corridor has to be booked, restrictions on using the public mall area at all, and whether a certificate of insurance is required from the moving company. We are licensed in Utah, carry general liability insurance and can provide one, and processing on their side is habitually slower than anyone plans for.

Ask specifically about protecting common areas. Many centres require floor protection through shared corridors and will hold a tenant responsible for damage to them. That is worth knowing in advance rather than being billed for later.

Trading around the move

Most centre moves happen overnight or in the early morning, because the alternative is carrying fixtures through a mall full of shoppers.

That means arranging after-hours access, and it means somebody with keys and alarm codes being reachable. It also means the work is being done by people who cannot simply pop out for something they forgot, so the preparation has to be complete.

Sequence for reopening. Get the sales floor to a state where it can trade, then finish the stockroom and back of house. A stockroom in boxes is survivable. A shop that cannot open is not.

Fixtures and stock

Fixtures are the constraint. Shelving, gondolas, display units and counters usually come apart, and how they come apart determines how fast the new unit becomes a shop.

Photograph the current arrangement before anything is dismantled, and label components by where they are going rather than where they came from. A panel marked with its origin has to be looked up by somebody holding it.

Run stock down before the move if you possibly can. It is the cheapest saving available on any retail move and it is routinely left too late to act on.

Nominate one person present who can make decisions without phoning anybody. Every move produces small unanticipated questions and somebody has to answer them.
