Collecting furniture you have bought privately involves a situation people rarely think through: somebody carrying your property out of a stranger's house, through their doorways, and into yours.

If something goes wrong, it is not always obvious who is responsible for what. Here is how it actually works.

Damage to the seller's home

This is the one people never consider and it is the most awkward. A scraped wall or a marked floor at an address you do not own, involving somebody you will not see again.

If a moving company is doing the carrying, this is what their general liability insurance is for, and it is the main practical reason to use one rather than a friend with a truck. If you and a friend do it, the exposure is personal.

Always ask the seller in advance to clear the route and move anything breakable. Most people do not think to, and it prevents nearly all of it.

Damage to the item

Ownership has usually transferred at payment, which means it is your item being carried, not the seller's.

Condition is the thing to establish first. Secondhand furniture frequently has loose joints and existing marks, and a piece that was already loose can fail in transit with nobody handling it badly. Photograph it before it is lifted, from several angles, including anything already damaged.

That protects you and the crew equally, and it converts an argument into a comparison.

Damage to your home

Standard, and covered the same way any delivery would be. Clear your own route beforehand and decide where the piece is going before it arrives, so nothing is set down twice.

Injury

Worth stating plainly. A moving company's crew is covered under its own arrangements. A friend hurt on a staircase carrying your sofa is not, and neither is the seller.

This is the strongest argument against handling a heavy item informally, and it is the one nobody weighs until afterwards.

Practical points

Ask whether it comes apart, and whether it was assembled in the room. Confirm stairs at both ends when booking. Pay before rather than during, so nobody is handling money mid-lift.
