For a long move there are two mainstream options: a moving company that does everything, or a container dropped in your driveway that you fill yourself.
We do both, including loading containers for people, so this is a fair comparison rather than a case for one.
Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Washington and Washington County.
Full-service moving
A crew loads, the company transports, a crew unloads and places furniture and reassembles what came apart.
Better when: the household is large, there are stairs, you have specialist items, you physically cannot do the loading, or your time is worth more than the difference.
Also better for accountability. One company handles your goods throughout, which means one party is responsible if something is damaged. That is a genuine advantage and people undervalue it.
The cost is higher, and you get a delivery window rather than control of timing.
Container moving
A container is delivered, you load it at your own pace, it is collected, transported and delivered to the new address, and you unload.
Better when: the household is modest, you have time and people, the dates are uncertain, or you want a period of storage built in. That last point is the container's real strength.
The costs people miss: you are doing the labour, which for a full house is several days of hard work. Where the container may be placed is restricted, and around Washington many community associations will not permit one in a driveway or on a street, which can rule it out entirely.
Accountability splits. If you loaded it, damage in transit is difficult to attribute, and the container company's liability generally addresses its equipment rather than how the contents were packed.
The middle option
Frequently the best value: rent the container and hire a crew to load it, and another to unload at the far end.
You get the container's flexibility and storage, and the loading is done by people who do it daily, which matters because a badly loaded container shifts during handling and lifting.

Before you decide
Check with your HOA whether a container is permitted and for how long. This is the question that settles it for a lot of people here.
Get both quotes properly, including loading labour in the container comparison. They are frequently closer than expected.
