Seven days out

Confirm the booking and confirm the details have not changed. If you have added a storage unit, or the garage is now coming, or the date has shifted, say so now rather than on the morning.

Book anything that is not us: utilities at both addresses, an electrician if a spa or hard-wired appliance is involved, a cleaner for after. These are the tasks that get remembered too late.

Start the last of the packing. Not the kitchen yet, but everything else should be closing out.

Three days out

Finish packing everything except what you are using to live. Every box taped, closed and labelled by destination room rather than contents.

Set aside a clearly marked area for anything that is not going, and tell the crew about it on the day. This single step prevents the most common category of mistake.

Empty and defrost the freezer, and drain washing machine hoses. Both need longer than people allow.

Pack the first-night box and put it in your own vehicle: bedding, toiletries, medication, chargers, a change of clothes, something to open boxes with, toilet paper.

The day before

Finish the kitchen. Confirm parking is clear at both ends, and if you need to reserve a space or ask a neighbour to move a car, do it now.

Charge your phone. Make sure someone will be reachable at both addresses.

In winter, clear and salt the walkways and steps at both properties, and plan to do it again in the morning.

On the day

Be there for the walkthrough at the start. Point out what is fragile, what is not going, and which room in the new house each area corresponds to. Mention the shed, the attic and the garage freezer, because those are the things that get forgotten.

Then stay reachable and let the crew work. You are not expected to carry anything and it usually slows things down, since the crew is working to a loading plan.

At the end, walk the truck and every room, including the garage. Raise anything that needs raising while the crew is still there.
