Establish what is actually yours

Mid-lease moves have the ownership problem in its worst form, because the household continues afterwards. In an end-of-lease move everything leaves eventually. Here, most things stay and only some go.

Agree it in writing between yourselves before anybody packs. The furniture, the kitchen equipment, the things bought jointly in the first week and never thought about since. A crew cannot arbitrate and should not be asked to.

Then use the one method that removes all ambiguity: put everything that is going into one clearly marked area before the crew arrives. Anything not in that space stays. It is faster than pointing at items one at a time and it is impossible to get wrong.

If you are subletting

Work out what happens to your furniture while you are away, because there are only three answers and they cost differently.

It stays and the subletter uses it, which needs agreeing properly rather than assuming. It goes into storage, which is a recurring cost against a defined return date. Or it goes home, if home is close enough for that to make sense.

Whichever it is, decide before booking rather than after, because it determines whether this is a move to an address, a move to a unit, or no move at all.

Practical points

Small moves are billed on the crew's time and the biggest factor is rarely the furniture. It is access: which floor, whether there is a lift, and how far a truck can park from the door. Lead with that when you call.

Be completely packed before the crew arrives. Label by destination room rather than contents.

Check whether your complex needs the move booked or restricts hours, and whether they want a certificate of insurance, which we can provide. Mid-lease moves still count as moves as far as most buildings are concerned.

Standard furniture disassembly and reassembly is included, which matters since flat-packed furniture often will not come out any other way.
