Moving in winter

The route from where a truck can park to your door is the thing that decides whether the day is safe. In a lot of student housing that is a shared lot and an external staircase, both of which are frequently snow-covered and neither of which is your responsibility.

Check the night before. If it has not been cleared, tell the building, and salt what you can yourself in the morning. An external metal staircase with ice on it is genuinely dangerous with a box in your hands.

Allow more time than you would in summer. Everything takes longer and it should.

Some things should not sit in a cold truck for long: anything with a battery, screens, and anything liquid that could freeze. Keep those in your own vehicle.

What to bring, and what not to

Find out in writing what the room actually includes before you transport anything. Bed and mattress, desk, storage, kitchen equipment, whether shared areas are furnished. It varies enormously between buildings and people routinely arrive with a bed for a furnished room or nothing for an unfurnished one.

If you are coming from out of state, bring less than you think. Transporting anything a long way costs the same whether it is good or cheap, and much of what students ship is bulky and easily replaced.

Practical

Small moves are billed on the crew's time, and access dominates it: which floor, whether there is a lift, and the distance from the parking to your door.

Be completely packed before the crew arrives. Everything boxed, taped and closed, labelled by destination room.

If several of you are moving in or out of the same building, share the booking. Much of what you pay for is a crew reaching you and working one building, so it is meaningfully better value per person. Agree beforehand who is settling it.

Ask the building whether moves need booking, whether hours are restricted, and whether they want a certificate of insurance, which we can provide.
