Somebody carrying your furniture down an icy path is exposed to a risk you partly control. It is worth knowing how that works, because the answer affects what you should do before the day and what insurance is relevant.

Two different kinds of cover

The mover's side. A properly run company covers its own crew for injury at work, through workers' compensation. That is the primary protection for the people carrying your things, and it is a fair question to ask any company you hire.

It is also the sharpest practical difference between a licensed company and casual labour hired for the day. Where somebody is not covered, an injury on your property becomes a much more open question.

Your side. Homeowners and renters policies generally include liability cover for injuries to people on your property. That is what would respond to a claim that a hazard on the property caused the injury.

Whether such a claim succeeds turns on the circumstances, and the practical point is not to end up testing it.

What actually reduces the risk

All of it is ordinary and all of it works.

Clear and treat the route the night before and again in the morning, then re-treat during the day. Deal with steps and the landing above all, since that is where falls are worst.

Point out hazards rather than assuming they are obvious: a loose step, a drip line that refreezes, a low branch, a step down in poor light.

Keep the route lit if any of the work happens in the dark, which in December it will.

Keep pets shut away. A dog underfoot on an icy step is a genuine hazard rather than a nuisance.

Your own helpers are the gap

Worth stating plainly. If friends or family help alongside a hired crew, they are not covered by the company's arrangements, and frequently not by their own.

Give the hired crew the stairs, the heavy items and anything on treated ground, and keep helpers on flat, cleared, indoor work.

Ask when you book

Whether the crew are employees, and whether the company carries workers' compensation and general liability. Ask for the certificate rather than accepting the claim.

Any company that hesitates over those questions has answered them.
