Where that exists it is often the better route, because it is short and it avoids taking a safe through the house entirely. It is also usually narrow, steep and, in winter, likely to hold ice or standing water.
If you have one, photograph it and measure the opening. It genuinely may be the answer, and it is the sort of thing homeowners forget to mention because they think of it as a back door rather than a route.
